MIRELLA KA: THE VOLUNTEER'S KARMA

Dear all,

I’d like to share with you the gifts that the Universe*** gave me for my first weekend in Kalamata.
Friday nights EVS volunteers normally gather in a nice place to have some good time, while enjoying Greek foods, drinks and music and discussing ideas and projects. Last Friday the chosen place was Σταθμός (Stathmos).

It’s amazing how lucky we were to go there and realize that a nice exhibition is taking place, and not only the title and the idea are very interesting “My other self” , not only the artworks are with strong messages and made by diverse technics, but the Curator himself was there and made a special tour in English for us! Thank you so much Mr. Vasilis Karizonis! Σας ευχαριστούμε πολύ τον κύριο Βασίλη Καριζόνη!

WORLD, I wanna show you WHAT VOLUNTEERS’ VIBES
(energy, existence, life, philosophy, whatever....) DOES LOOK LIKE...
I met these girls less than a week ago...
they are gorgeous and I already love them!
After this experience we choose the biggest table in the restaurant and we opened a menu, which we could use in some time, but for sure not now! No English version of the meals… So we really needed help. And we got it! From two very nice gentleman – one of them cooking and one serving, explaining us what is what. It was a funny moment when one of the girls explained she wanted something without cheese, tomatoes and olives. And then the guy laughed: “But that’s half of the Greek kitchen!”

Something that I really love about Greek restaurant service is that water and bread are for free. Olive oil which is like brilliant, as well! As proper Greeks, the guys from Stathmos restaurant showed us their hospitality and generosity – regularly offering us between our own orders some wine, some local cheese (different than Feta) and some dessert… then wine again… 😊

When we were ready to pay and leave, something happened that changed the direction of our conversations and made us stay for one or two more hours! It was a simple thing like one of the guys from our company asked the Cook why he is wearing on his T-shirt the logo of some Water Sports Club. Then the guy explained he is the President of this club and on Sunday they are organizing an open event with different activities for free. This conversation lead to another one… and another one… we were talking about the social-cultural life of Kalamata, the Stathmos guys were showing us photos and videos from previous projects and events they were organizing. They even filmed some songs that are taking place in the same restaurant and on the same streets that we are walking every day. They were also curious to know more about our projects and ideas, they offered us cooperation for future happenings.

For me personally it was very interesting the getting-to-know the other volunteers who has been living in Kalamata for some months already and who made me think about the fact that going abroad for a long term volunteering makes you become something very particular “a mixture of a tourist and a local”.

Going to bed on Friday night I was so happy and fulfilled after this inspiring and productive (very spontaneous) meeting in Stathmos Restaurant.

The next experience which was another gift from the Universe was going to ΠεριβαλλοντικηΕκδηλωση στον Ποταμο Αρι (Environmental event on the river Ari).

We received a special transfer from Stathmos restaurant to the event by a car from the organizers!
The first minute we arrived, all of us, we jumped to a canoe and a water bicycle. It was like encouraging act for the other visitors to take action and try the attractions as well.

I think 11 months will be too short for me to admire and enjoy enough the view of the mountains around Kalamata. And the feeling to stay in a kayak in the river watching this beautiful scenery is priceless!

It was so enjoyable the combination of perfect weather, traditional Greek food and traditional Greek dances – χορό, which remind me so much the Bulgarian horo. Then I read that there are actually hora in plenty of other countries! *Hora, also known as horo and oro, is a type of circle dance originating in the Balkans but also found in other countries - Romania and Moldova, Bulgaria, FYROM, Montenegro, Turkey, Israel (horah), Klezmer music (horah).

The dancers were dressed with Traditional Costumes and they were so beautiful!

There was a funny moment when I only remembered the Greek word for “wine”, but I forgot how “red” is and I ended up having a glass of white wine, which I don’t like so much, so some of the girls were happy with an extra dose.

Something that I’m excited about is that for first time I tried riding a horse! It’s a nice feeling to share energies with such a noble animal.

I feel in love with the Greek talent of having fun and enjoying to dance. Yesterday during the event I’ve noticed a lady dancing, then I couldn’t stop any more watching at her… or staring at her with the biggest smile my happy face could produce. I was only thinking I love those people so much, I want to hug them all…

After her dance, the lady came to me and started: “κορίτσι μου”…… bla-bla-bla, something in Greek, so I only told her “δεν καταλαβαίνω”. Then she went to her daughter asking her for translation and came back to me telling me “I love you!” and hugging me. My answer was hugging her back and “κι εγω σ’αγαπω!”

*** For some time now I’ve been practicing in my life the belief that Universe is my best friend and actually it helps me a lot to enjoy life on Earth. Steps are easy:
1. You really believe with all your heart and soul that everything happening in your life is for your own good and for the good of the whole Universe
2. You trust to Universe for the gifts it brings to your life
3. You receive perfect synchronization of timing, energies & vibes, which reflects to the places, people and events (happenings) in your life
4. You stay with open eyes and senses to recognize and appreciate them
5. You feel happy!

MIRELLA KA: First Ukulele Class in my life

Yesterday I was so excited to attend for first time in my life an Ukulele class. I have this pink Ukulele since more than a year and it was always staying untouched in the wardrobe. I had the wish to learn how to play, but just I'm not interested in the seld-educational system by YouTube, so I knew one day I will meet someone that will simply show me the first basic things and then it's up to me the practise and the volonty to move forward.

Then, while packing my luggage from Bulgaria to come to Kalamata for my EVS, I didn't have any doubt that I have to take the pink Ukulele with me.
And as I understood since my first day I'm here, that in the Youth Centre of Kalamata (Κέντρο Νέων Καλαμάτας)., there is a Ukulele class, I was soooooooo excited!

So, there it happened yesterday, I received some instructions and clarifications about how to hold it, how to use the fingers, starting with some chords.  The girl, leading this workshop - Anna from Poland, is a true treasure - always smiling, with so gentle voice, playing so well and explaining so patiently to many people on different level "in the same time".

As I don't know nothing about playing Ukulele, and there are people who started this lessons months ago, we were divided in groups. The begginers group were me and Kaya. She already knows something, so she was helping me.

The advantage of your Ukulele Mentor being 10 years old cute Greek girl is that suddenly while practicing, you start to learn in Greek words like “rainbow” (Ουράνιο Τόξο), “unicorn” (μονόκερος), etc... I was proud that I already know “mermaid” (γοργόνα)!

The teacher assured me that just in 3 months following these lessons, I could play! I really hope this happens and I don't become too lazy for my plan to fail.

MIRELLA KA: Brazilian Dance Forro in Youth Center of Kalamata

Last night I visited the Σεμινάριο Βραζιλιάνικου Χορού Forró - a workshop of Brazilian Dance Forro, which took place in the Youth Centre of Kalamata (Κέντρο Νέων Καλαμάτας).

Our teacher was Wellington Figueiredo, a Brazilian dancer, who is practising and teaching Forro since many, many years - something like more than 20 and who has been living in Kalamata for 2 years now.

He explained us very nicely the basic steps for Forro and how the dance evoluted since his childhood until nowadays. What impressed me a lot, was that this evolution in the way you make the basic steps is connected with the fact that back in the time in Brazil most of the places were a ground without any flooring, so that if you rub your feet while doing the steps, a lot of dust produced!

Can you imagine that such a "small" detail from the social daily life makes an inflluence on your folklore dance?! It's amazing and I'm always curious to investigate, explore and follow those kind of things.

It was funny when the teacher was explaining that someone could recognize the steps and the movements from Forro as salsa, tango, bachata, merengue, valse.... but no! Forro is FORRO! 😊

People who attended the Forro Workshop was really doing good!

Here is a video that our Romanian volunteer Mina took. ENJOY!

Let the adventure begin

What does EVS feel like? It might seem awesome or scarry at first, but…is it an opportunity, is it a risk? We can’t know for sure, but after all that’s the thrill and the beauty of it, isn’t it? It can be whatever you choose it to be!

You have the opportunity to meet new people and learn a new language. You have the possibility to develop new skills and to share a part of what you know with other people. You can even choose a new beginning!

I can tell for sure that it’s stepping out of your comfort zone and that is the moment a new adventure begins.
I too was scared at first, but once here I’m happy to say “Let the adventure begin!

cleaning of the beach from Divari to Gialova

ZEGOUD BILAL

On Sunday 8 October, the organizer (fotini, jenela, etc.) organized the cleaning of the beach from Divari to Gialova.
Divari (golden beach) is a long sandy beach that begins at the end of the village of Gialova and continues towards the Gialova lagoon and the ancient castle of Navarino.
On the other side of the lagoon of Gialova is the beach of Voidokillia, an incredible oval beach.
The entire coastal zone and wetlands of the Gialova Divari lagoon (or Osman Aga lagoon) has been designated a European ecological site Natura 2000.

As the very well explain our manager :)

it was a real moment of sharing and ecological ways to give nature what nature gives us :)
when the bands I could not hope for better, the atmosphere was at the rendezvous and everyone is put to the heart joy.
We had a magical moment

First week in Kalamata

I love taking pictures of the place I'm visiting. I see pictures as "the photographer's point of view "about a place. I would like to share today my "first week photo story" of Kalamata !

As you will see through the following pictures I'm in love with the landscapes of the city !
I really appreciate Kalamata because it is between the mountains and the sea ! I litteraly can't stop taking pictures of both ! Every time I'm going out I'm taking pictures of what amazed me ! To be honest I've already have a lot of pictures of the same places... but it's never really the same because lights are changing ! I’m very happy because as I will be here for 11 months I will be able to see the different faces of Kalamata during each season !

This is my first time in Greece so I’m also amazed by the flowers, the narrow streets , the colored churches, the fruit trees (fig tree, olive tree), the houses… As every thing is new I enjoyed taking picture of it ! This might be funny for people who lived here for ever or for a long time because you are used to it but…for me it’s like living into a tourist guide !

Yesterday I went to the castle. I was delighted by the little streets to reach it, by the plants, by the power of past we can feel there and more than everything by the view we have on Kalamata !

PS : Be careful the cat who lives in the Castle is a real stalker... but as you can see on the picture not really dangerous ;)
